Supreme Court Bars Jagannath Film Release Till Rath Yatra Ends
The Supreme Court of India has upheld the Orissa High Court’s interim order restraining the release of the animation film Mahaprabhu Jagannath until the conclusion of the Rath Yatra festival.
The petition, filed by Mahesh Sahu, a member of the Shree Jagannath Temple Management Committee, argued that the film misrepresents the rituals, traditions, and cultural heritage of Lord Jagannath.
The court emphasised the importance of safeguarding religious sentiments during the sacred festival.
Advocate General Pitambar Acharya represented the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration, while Solicitor General Tushar Mehetta appeared for the state government.
The apex court’s decision ensures that the film will not be released until further review after the festival concludes.
This ruling highlights the judiciary’s role in balancing freedom of expression with cultural sensitivity, particularly in matters involving revered traditions.
