Odisha Braces for Floods as July Rainfall Surges 17%

Odisha has witnessed 17% excess rainfall in July, raising concerns of flood‑like conditions across several districts.

Heavy downpours have caused rivers to swell, with Balangir and Baleshwar facing imminent flood threats.

In Balangir, the Sapua River overflowed, inundating villages such as Madhusudanpatan and Kakudia.

Similarly, water levels in Mathani, Baleshwar, are nearing danger marks, prompting authorities to issue flood alerts.

Rising river levels also threaten Dhenkanal and Athagarh, while the Hirakud reservoir is expected to see further inflow, heightening risks downstream.

Rescue and relief teams are on standby, and advisories urge residents to avoid riverbanks and low‑lying areas.

Farmers have been cautioned during paddy transplantation, as excess rainfall may damage crops and livelihoods.

The Meteorological Department forecasts continued rainfall due to active monsoon conditions.

Experts emphasise the need for long‑term flood management and water conservation strategies to mitigate recurring risks.
