OHRC Directs Odisha Govt to Ensure Security and Healthcare During Bahuda Yatra in Puri
Puri, Odisha: The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has directed the state government to ensure foolproof crowd management and healthcare arrangements during the upcoming Bahuda Yatra of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra.
The directive follows the tragic incident during the Rath Yatra on July 16, when a stampede‑like situation at Marichikote Square left two devotees dead and nearly 100 injured.
The chaos erupted after barricades were breached during the Pahandi ritual.
Responding to a petition filed by advocate Nishikant Mishra, the OHRC instructed the Home Department, Puri Collector, and Superintendent of Police to strengthen barricading, regulate devotee movement, and deploy adequate security personnel.
The Commission also asked the Health Department to ensure timely medical treatment for injured devotees.
The opposition BJD has echoed demands for proper healthcare support for those affected.
The OHRC emphasised that preventive measures and medical readiness are essential to avoid a repeat of the tragedy during the Bahuda Yatra.
