Against All Odds: Odisha Teachers Cross Indravati Reservoir to Keep Classrooms Alive
In the remote villages of Nabarangpur district, two primary school teachers—Rotia Harijan and Ajit Kumar Khurana—embody extraordinary dedication.
Each day, they row across the vast Indravati reservoir and trek rugged terrain to reach their schools, ensuring education continues for children in isolated communities.
Rotia rows for over 90 minutes before walking 7 km to Tanginigota, where he teaches 42 students.
Ajit undertakes a similar journey, rowing and then walking 4 km to Gurumaiguda, where more than 50 children await him. Both teachers purchased their own boats to overcome the lack of infrastructure.
Their commute takes 3–4 hours daily, often through dangerous waters and hilly trails.
Yet, their commitment remains unwavering: “Our students’ future comes first.”
Rotia’s dedication was recognised by the district administration during Independence Day celebrations, highlighting the resilience and sacrifice of educators who refuse to let geography dictate opportunity.
