Bay of Bengal System May Intensify; IMD Issues Yellow Alert for Odisha Coast

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Alert for Odisha’s coastal districts as a developing low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify in the coming days.

According to the weather agency, the system is likely to form over the southeast and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal and may gradually strengthen while moving northwestwards.

Meteorological models are closely monitoring the weather system, with some global forecasts indicating the possibility of further intensification between October 24 and 28.

However, officials have clarified that there is currently no cyclone warning in effect and no immediate threat to Odisha.

As a precautionary measure, the IMD has issued a Yellow Alert for October 26 and 27, warning of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph in coastal and adjoining districts of Odisha.

Weather experts noted that greater clarity regarding the system’s track, intensity and any potential landfall scenario is expected after the low-pressure area consolidates over the Bay of Bengal.

Authorities have advised fishermen, coastal residents and local administrations to stay updated with official weather bulletins and follow advisories issued by the IMD.

While uncertainty remains over the eventual path of the system, the latest forecasts suggest that Odisha is likely to experience increased rainfall activity, thunderstorms and gusty winds during the alert period.

The IMD continues to monitor the evolving weather conditions and will issue further updates as necessary.
