Odisha Reviews Monsoon Preparedness to Ensure Zero Casualty Goal
Bhubaneswar: The Water Resources Department of Odisha has intensified its flood preparedness measures ahead of the 2026 monsoon season, aiming for a “Zero Casualty” outcome.
At a high‑level pre‑flood meeting chaired by Principal Secretary Shubha Sarma and Engineer‑in‑Chief Bibhuti Bhusan Dash, officials reviewed the health of river embankments and directed urgent completion of pending repair works.
Functionality of sluice gates and desiltation of drainage channels were prioritised to prevent waterlogging in vulnerable areas.
Flood Control Rooms will operate round‑the‑clock from June 1 to October 31 at the Division, Circle, and Chief Engineer levels.
Simultaneously, Flood Cells at Secha Sadan and SHDC, Bhubaneswar, will remain active, issuing flood bulletins twice daily under direct supervision.
Stockpiling of flood‑fighting materials such as sandbags, bamboo poles, and wire meshes has been mandated, along with the readiness of emergency equipment.
Mock drills at major dams have tested flood gate functionality and administrative response.
Officials emphasised interstate coordination with co‑basin states for real‑time water flow data exchange.
District administrations, police, and local representatives have been instructed to maintain seamless cooperation during emergencies.
The Water Resources Department reiterated its commitment to minimising risks through strict vigilance, infrastructure readiness, and coordinated action across agencies.
