Kamal Haasan Calls for Cost Discipline in Indian Film Industry Amid Global Crisis
Veteran actor and Rajya Sabha MP Kamal Haasan has urged the Indian film industry to adopt stricter financial discipline in the wake of global economic uncertainty triggered by the West Asia conflict.
Speaking on the need to safeguard cinema’s sustainability, Haasan emphasised that producers must avoid wasteful spending and focus on efficiency without compromising workers’ livelihoods.
He criticised inflated production practices such as oversized entourages, unnecessary foreign travel, and poor planning that led to delays and spiralling budgets.
Haasan warned that rising inflation could reduce audiences’ willingness to spend on entertainment, making meaningful storytelling more important than lavish sets or extravagant promotions.
Producers have responded positively to his appeal. Vyjayanthi Movies welcomed the call for responsible measures, while Shibu Thameens noted that financial discipline should begin at the script stage.
The recent success of low‑budget films like Love Today and Tourist Family, along with acclaimed Malayalam releases, underscores that strong content can thrive without excessive spending.
Haasan’s remarks are expected to spark wider industry discussions on balancing creativity with cost control, especially as theatrical revenues remain unpredictable and digital platforms grow more competitive.
The actor was last seen in Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam and is set to appear in the sequel to Kalki 2898 AD alongside Prabhas and Amitabh Bachchan.
He also has a project lined up with Nelson Dilipkumar featuring Rajinikanth.
