Japanese Tourist Detained After Breach at Lingaraj Temple
Bhubaneswar witnessed a tense moment on Wednesday when a Japanese tourist allegedly entered the garbhagriha (inner sanctum) of the historic Shree Lingaraj Temple, violating strict rules that reserve access exclusively for Hindus.
According to temple authorities, the visitor was accompanied by a local guide who helped him bypass restrictions.
Both individuals were detained by temple servitors and later handed over to the Shree Lingaraj Police for questioning.
Temple regulations clearly prohibit non-Hindus from entering the sanctum, allowing them only to view the deity from a designated platform outside.
Despite warning signboards, breaches have occurred in the past, raising concerns about enforcement.
Officials confirmed that purification rituals will be conducted to restore sanctity following the incident.
The temple administration has vowed to strengthen vigilance and prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Built in the 11th century, the Lingaraj Temple is a jewel of Kalinga architecture and a major spiritual landmark in Odisha.
While it attracts thousands of devotees and tourists, the sanctum remains a sacred space reserved for Hindu worshippers.
