IMD Issues Heavy Rainfall Alert for Odisha Coast

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of heavy rainfall and rough sea conditions along the Odisha coast as a depression intensifies over the northwest Bay of Bengal.

Centred near Balasore, the system is expected to cross the North Odisha coast between Chandbali and Digha within 24 hours before moving inland toward North Odisha and North Chhattisgarh.

Several districts have already recorded torrential downpours, with Khajuripada receiving 28 cm, Tureikela 26 cm, and Phulbani 22 cm of rainfall.

Other areas, including Baliguda, Titlagarh, and Nischintakoili, also reported significant precipitation.

The IMD has cautioned fishermen against venturing into the sea between July 5–7, as rough to very rough conditions are expected.

Ports have hoisted Local Cautionary Signal No‑III, and authorities have warned of risks such as localised flooding, waterlogging, traffic disruptions, landslides, crop damage, and minor structural losses.

Residents are advised to avoid low‑lying areas and follow official advisories as the system brings widespread rainfall before gradually weakening inland.
