Naveen Patnaik Rallies Odias Against MMDR Bill, Calls It a Threat to State’s Rights
Leader of the Opposition and BJD president Naveen Patnaik has issued a strong appeal to Odias worldwide to unite against the recently passed Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Act (MMDR Bill).
In a video message, Patnaik warned that the amendment strips Odisha of its fiscal autonomy and control over its mineral wealth.
Highlighting Odisha’s economic turnaround under his leadership—from financial distress in 2000 to a Rs 50,000 crore revenue surplus by 2024—Patnaik credited mining taxes as the backbone of the state’s growth.
He argued that the new law, passed without adequate debate, deprives Odisha of its right to levy taxes on key minerals such as iron ore, coal, bauxite, chromite, and manganese.
Patnaik accused BJP MPs from Odisha of failing to defend the state’s interests, stressing that the amendment will cost Odisha thousands of crores annually—funds that could have supported schools, hospitals, roads, and welfare schemes.
Calling the move a “conspiracy to weaken Odisha,” Patnaik urged Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi to convene an all‑party meeting and a special Assembly session.
He vowed to continue the fight, declaring: “This land is ours.
These mines are ours. I will fight till my last breath to protect Odisha’s rights.”
