Hirakud Set for Global Tourism Makeover: CS Reviews Mega Projects

Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s Chief Secretary Anu Garg has reviewed the ambitious Hirakud Integrated Tourism Development Plan, aimed at transforming Hirakud from a dam‑centric site into a multi‑dimensional global tourism destination.

The review highlighted flagship projects including the Hirakud Dam Museum & Arrival Plaza, Light & Laser Symphony, ropeway, cruise terminal, floatel, Mahanadi Island Nature Park, redevelopment of Jawahar Park, and the Burla‑Hirakud Iconic Bridge.

Cultural and heritage initiatives such as the second phase of Maa Samaleswari Temple development, Huma Temple, Ghanteswari Temple, and the Power Channel Promenade were also discussed.

Connectivity is set to improve with the Jamadarpalli airstrip tender process nearing completion.

The extended tourism circuit will cover Veer Surendra Sai’s birthplace, waterfront development along Mahanadi and Power Channel, Debrigarh Sanctuary, a weaver village, and a Mining Museum with an Underground Mine Experience Centre.

Emphasising inter‑departmental coordination, Garg underscored the vision of Hirakud as a hub for nature, water, adventure, heritage, culture, and industrial tourism.

With these initiatives, Hirakud is poised to become one of Odisha’s most compelling and sustainable tourism destinations.
