Utkal University Bans Fuel Vehicles on Saturdays to Go Green

Bhubaneswar, May 2026: Utkal University has introduced a new eco-friendly initiative by restricting the entry of petrol and diesel vehicles on Saturdays between 9 am and 5 pm.

The move, implemented on the advice of Odisha Governor and Chancellor Hari Babu Kambhampati, aims to promote a pollution-free campus.

Security guards enforced the restriction at the main gate, supported by banners and five personnel on duty. However, the sudden implementation caused inconvenience for students, parents, staff, and visitors, who had to park outside and walk long distances in the heat. Some visitors opposed the rule, leading to arguments with guards.

While critics claimed the university failed to provide prior notice, Vice-Chancellor Sabita Acharya clarified that information had been circulated earlier. To ease the transition, the administration arranged battery-operated vehicles and ambulance services inside the campus.

Officials are also exploring further alternatives, as banks and offices within the premises require regular access.

The Vice-Chancellor emphasised that similar eco-friendly rules are already in place at other universities across Odisha, positioning Utkal University as part of a broader sustainability drive.
