BMC Council Meeting Turns Chaotic as Corporator Livestreams Proceedings, Sanitation Issues Spark Uproar

Bhubaneswar: High drama unfolded during the 45th General Council meeting of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) as heated exchanges over sanitation tenders and civic issues culminated in the suspension of a corporator for allegedly livestreaming the proceedings on Facebook.

The council meeting witnessed intense discussions on delays in sanitation services and garbage collection across several wards of the city.

Corporators expressed concern over the disruption of waste management operations and sought immediate intervention from civic authorities.

The situation escalated when Ward No. 37 Corporator Bandita Pal reportedly went live on Facebook during the proceedings, broadcasting discussions from inside the House.

The move drew sharp objections from fellow corporators, who argued that livestreaming council proceedings violated established norms and disrupted decorum.

As tensions mounted, Mayor Sulochana Das intervened and ordered the suspension of the corporator from the remainder of the session, citing misconduct and disorderly behaviour.

Apart from the controversy over the livestream, corporators also raised objections to the inauguration of a road project without informing the concerned ward corporator and the Mayor.

Several members termed the incident a breach of administrative protocol and demanded accountability.

Sanitation remained the central issue during the meeting, with elected representatives criticising delays in appointing a new agency for garbage collection after the previous contractor’s tenure ended.

Responding to the concerns, BMC Commissioner Chanchal Rana informed the House that a new sanitation service provider had been selected and the proposal had been forwarded to the state government for approval.

The Commissioner assured members that the sanitation issues would be resolved soon once the approval process was completed.

The event highlighted growing concerns over civic service delivery and administrative coordination, while the suspension of a corporator added further drama to an already contentious council session.
