Low-Pressure Area Over Andaman Sea May Intensify Into Depression; IMD Warns of Heavy Rain in Odisha
Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported the formation of a fresh low-pressure area over the South Andaman Sea and adjoining regions, with forecasts indicating that the system is likely to intensify into a depression in the coming days.
According to IMD, the weather system has developed under the influence of an upper-air cyclonic circulation and is expected to become more organized as it moves west-northwestwards over the Bay of Bengal.
Meteorologists are closely monitoring its development and projected track.
The weather agency has warned that the evolving system could trigger heavy rainfall across several districts of Odisha, particularly in the southern part of the state.
Districts including Gajapati, Ganjam, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri are likely to experience enhanced rainfall activity as the system gains strength.
While the precise intensity and landfall trajectory remain under assessment, officials have urged residents, fishermen, and administrations in vulnerable areas to stay updated with official weather advisories and take necessary precautions.
The formation of the new low-pressure system comes even as the remnants of the previous cyclonic circulation continue to weaken over parts of eastern India.
Weather experts say the Bay of Bengal remains conducive for further intensification of the system.
Authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation, and additional alerts may be issued depending on the system’s movement and intensity over the next few days.
