Bhubaneswar, May 19: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s historic visit to Norway—the first by an Indian PM in 43 years—was marked by a symbolic exchange of gifts that showcased India’s rich cultural heritage.
To Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store, Modi presented a Pressed Orchid Painting and orchid paperweights from Sikkim, highlighting biodiversity and sustainability.
Crown Prince Haakon received a Kalamkari painting with Sun and Moon motifs, symbolising cosmic balance and resonating with Norway’s “midnight sun.” Queen Sonja was gifted a Palm Leaf Pattachitra from Odisha, an intricate engraving tradition blending storytelling and heritage.
King Harald V was presented with a silver sailboat model crafted in Tarakasi filigree from Cuttack, reflecting Odisha’s maritime legacy and Norway’s seafaring traditions.
The visit coincided with the 3rd India‑Nordic Summit in Oslo, where discussions focused on green technology and artificial intelligence.
Modi was conferred the Grand Cross of the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit, underscoring the strengthening of bilateral ties.
His broader five‑nation tour—including the UAE, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Italy—secured an investment pipeline worth nearly $40 billion, reinforcing India’s global economic outreach.
