Odisha Student Union Elections to Return After Eight Years; DGP Warns Against Violence and Outsider Interference

Bhubaneswar: Student union elections are set to make a comeback across colleges and universities in Odisha on October 15, 2026, marking their return after an eight-year hiatus.

Ahead of the polls, Director General of Police (DGP) Vinaytosh Mishra has issued a stern warning against campus violence, indiscipline, and outsider interference during the election process.

During a video conference with district Superintendents of Police (SPs), the DGP directed officers to maintain strict surveillance and ensure peaceful conduct of elections across educational institutions.

He emphasised that law enforcement agencies would take swift action against anyone attempting to disrupt the democratic process on campuses.

The DGP specifically instructed police to keep a close watch on outsiders and non-students who may attempt to influence election proceedings.

Authorities have made it clear that individuals who are not enrolled students will not be permitted to enter campuses for election-related activities or campaigning.

The Higher Education Department has released the election schedule, with notification scheduled for October 7, nomination filing on October 9, withdrawal of nominations and publication of the final candidate list on October 10, and the “Why I Stand For” meeting on October 14.

Polling and counting will take place on October 15, followed by the swearing-in ceremony on October 16.

The elections will be conducted in accordance with the recommendations of the Lyngdoh Committee, which prohibit direct political party involvement in campus elections.

Candidates are also required to adhere to a spending limit of ₹5,000, and any violation may lead to immediate cancellation of candidature.

To prevent any untoward incidents, police and local administrations have been directed to strengthen security arrangements in and around campuses across the state.

Officials expect the elections to provide students with an opportunity to participate in democratic leadership while maintaining discipline and transparency.

The return of student union elections is being seen as a significant development in Odisha’s higher education landscape, with authorities emphasising peaceful participation and strict compliance with election guidelines.
