NHRC Team Reaches Mahakalapada to Probe Sarpanch Chameli Ojha Allegations

Kendrapada: A three-member team of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has arrived in Odisha’s Kendrapada district to conduct an on-ground investigation into allegations made by Tikhiri Gram Panchayat Sarpanch Chameli Ojha.

The inquiry comes amid growing concerns over claims of caste-based abuse, harassment, and alleged misconduct by local officials.

The NHRC delegation is currently stationed at Mahakalapada Police Station, where it is questioning police personnel, block administration officials, and other individuals connected to the case.

The commission’s intervention follows allegations by Chameli Ojha, who accused officials of corruption and claimed she was subjected to verbal abuse, physical assault, and caste-related humiliation inside the office of the Mahakalapada Block Development Officer (BDO).

The controversy stems from an incident that occurred on June 11 when the elected representative reportedly raised concerns regarding irregularities in developmental works.

Following the dispute, administrative officials and police put forward a different account, alleging that the Sarpanch disrupted official work and behaved inappropriately with government staff.

The matter gained wider attention after Chameli Ojha was reportedly arrested from a hospital bed and produced before a court.

She was later released on bail. The incident triggered public outrage and demands for an impartial investigation into the treatment of a Dalit woman elected representative.

As part of its inquiry, the NHRC team is expected to record statements from eyewitnesses, inspect the site where the alleged incident occurred, and meet Chameli Ojha to hear her version of events.

Residents and local stakeholders are closely watching the proceedings, expecting the commission’s findings to establish accountability and recommend appropriate action if any human rights violations are confirmed.
