Odisha Govt Orders Immediate Use of Revised English Spellings

The Odisha government has directed all district administrations to immediately adopt revised English spellings for districts, sub-divisions, tehsils, blocks, and urban local bodies.

The Revenue and Disaster Management Department, led by Additional Chief Secretary Dr Arabinda Kumar Padhee, issued the order following a June 22 notification.

The revision aims to align English spellings more closely with Odia pronunciations, preserving linguistic and cultural identity.

While names and administrative statuses remain unchanged, the corrected spellings must now be used in all official documents, records, websites, portals, advertisements, signboards, and correspondence.

District Collectors have been tasked with ensuring compliance across government offices, panchayati raj institutions, and agencies, with mandatory action-taken reports due within 15 days.

Commercial establishments and private institutions have been given six months to update signboards and nameplates.

Officials emphasised that the move will ensure consistency and accuracy in records while reflecting Odia pronunciation in English usage.
