Hera Panchami 2026: Goddess Lakshmi’s Sacred Visit to Gundicha Temple

Puri, July 20, 2026 – The sacred ritual of Hera Panchami was observed with grandeur at Shree Gundicha Temple, marking the fifth day of the annual Rath Yatra.

The ceremony symbolises Goddess Lakshmi’s visit to Lord Jagannath after He departs the Srimandir without Her.

The day began with Goddess Lakshmi’s ceremonial bath and adornment with saree, ornaments, and flowers at the Jagannath Temple’s Bhandara Ghara.

She was then carried in a decorated palanquin from Singhadwara to Bada Danda, placed beside Lord Jagannath’s Nandighosha Rath near Gundicha Temple.

Evening rituals included Prasad Lagi, Bandapana, Chamar Alata, Ghasa Bidia, and Dahi Pati Manohi.

The highlight was the symbolic breaking of a small portion of Lord Jagannath’s Nandighosha Rath, representing Goddess Lakshmi’s displeasure at being left behind.

This act reflects divine affection, separation, and reunion central to Jagannath culture.

After the rituals, Goddess Lakshmi returned to the Srimandir via the Hera Gohiri Sahi route.

Preparations are now underway for the Bahuda Yatra on July 21, when the three chariots will be turned southwards near Nakachana Dwara, marking the deities’ return journey to the Jagannath Temple.
