Balangir MCH Pregnant Woman’s Death Triggers Protest, High-Level Probe Ordered
Balangir: A pregnant woman’s death at Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital (MCH), Balangir, has sparked public outrage, with family members alleging medical negligence and procedural lapses in her treatment.
Authorities have ordered a high-level investigation into the incident.
According to reports, the woman, a resident of the Kantabanji area, was admitted to the hospital for delivery.
After childbirth, her condition was reportedly stable, but she later developed complications and died during treatment.
The sudden death led to serious allegations against the hospital administration and medical staff.
The deceased woman’s husband, Anil Behera, alleged that he was denied access to his wife during her treatment and was reportedly assaulted by security personnel when he sought information about her condition.
These allegations further intensified public anger over the incident.
Following the death, relatives and local residents staged a protest at the hospital premises.
The unrest escalated into vandalism, with parts of the Gynaecology and Obstetrics Department allegedly damaged during the demonstrations.
Protesters also raised concerns about the overall functioning of the hospital, alleging difficulties in securing beds for patients and claiming that illegal payments are often demanded during admissions.
Adding to the controversy, allegations surfaced that the woman’s body was handed over to family members without conducting a post-mortem examination, prompting questions about whether established procedures were followed.
In response, Dr Pushpanjali Mishra, Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) of Balangir, visited the hospital and reviewed the situation.
A high-level inquiry has been initiated to examine allegations of medical negligence, possible procedural violations, and the conduct of security personnel.
Officials have assured that appropriate action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
The incident has once again put the spotlight on maternal healthcare services and accountability in public healthcare institutions.
