BJP vs BJD: Political Clash Erupts Over Naveen Patnaik’s Post on Arrested Activists
Bhubaneswar: A fresh political confrontation has erupted in Odisha between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) over a social media post by former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who had raised concerns about the arrest of two activists and called for the protection of democratic rights.
The controversy intensified after BJP leaders accused the BJD president of interfering in legal matters and encouraging forces that challenge law and order.
BJP State Vice President Dr Jatin Mohanty questioned Patnaik’s intervention, arguing that legal proceedings should be allowed to take their course.
The BJP further alleged that the former Chief Minister’s remarks sent conflicting signals regarding respect for judicial processes.
The dispute centres on the detention of activists Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das. Naveen Patnaik had publicly expressed concern over their arrests, emphasising the importance of safeguarding constitutional rights and democratic freedoms.
Responding strongly to BJP’s criticism, BJD leaders defended Patnaik’s position. BJD Media Coordinator Dr Lenin Mohanty stated that the former Chief Minister’s intervention was aimed at protecting democratic values and not influencing judicial proceedings.
He argued that the subsequent release of the activists strengthened BJD’s claim that concerns over civil liberties were justified.
The opposition party also accused BJP leaders of resorting to personal attacks against Naveen Patnaik instead of addressing public concerns and governance issues.
According to the BJD, attempts to target Patnaik personally were intended to divert attention from larger political and administrative questions.
The political exchange comes amid heightened attention surrounding the upcoming visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Odisha, during which he is scheduled to inaugurate the Reserve Bank of India’s Greenfield Data Centre near Bhubaneswar.
BJP leaders have projected the visit as a significant step toward strengthening Odisha’s digital infrastructure and technological growth.
As both parties continue to trade allegations, the episode has evolved into a broader debate on democratic rights, political accountability, and the role of public leaders in commenting on arrests and legal proceedings.
