Odisha Cabinet Approves Directorate of Archaeology, New Curator Service Rules

Bhubaneswar: In a landmark decision, the Odisha Cabinet has approved the establishment of a dedicated Directorate of Archaeology, marking a new era in heritage conservation.

The move fulfils a commitment made in October 2023 to restructure the Archaeological Curator Service and introduce comprehensive cadre rules.

The newly framed Odisha Archaeological Curator Service (Method of Recruitment and Conditions of Service) Rules, 2026, will regulate recruitment and promotion of officers in this specialised cadre.

Officials believe the Directorate will strengthen systematic protection, conservation, and promotion of Odisha’s ancient temples, monuments, and archaeological heritage.

Beyond preservation, the Directorate is expected to boost academic research, tourism promotion, and cultural showcasing on national and international platforms.

The government sees this reform as a crucial step toward safeguarding Odisha’s rich legacy while enhancing its global visibility.
