Wild Elephant Tramples Woman to Death in Rourkela

Rourkela, Odisha: A tragic incident unfolded in Kachhupada village under the Rourkela Forest Division on Saturday morning when a 55‑year‑old woman, Yamuna Mahanta, was killed by a wild elephant.

According to reports, Mahanta had stepped out of her home for open defecation when she encountered a lone tusker.

The elephant charged, knocked her down, and trampled her, leading to her instant death.

The sudden attack sparked panic among villagers, who rushed to the scene in shock.

Forest officials arrived promptly, initiated an investigation, and assured that compensation and assistance will be provided to the victim’s family as per government norms.

This incident underscores the growing human–wildlife conflict in Odisha’s forested regions, where elephant movement near villages has become a recurring concern.
