Odisha’s Heritage Rice Varieties Take Centre Stage at Bharat International Rice Conference 2026
Odisha’s rich agricultural heritage is making a strong impression at the Bharat International Rice Conference (BIRC) 2026, where the state is showcasing a diverse range of traditional rice varieties before national and international stakeholders.
The Odisha Rural Development and Marketing Society (ORMAS), functioning under the Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water Department, is representing the state at the three-day conference in New Delhi.
The initiative aims to promote Odisha’s indigenous rice varieties, strengthen market linkages, and create sustainable livelihood opportunities for rural farmers.
At the exhibition, Odisha has presented 15 traditional paddy and rice varieties collected from eight districts.
The showcase highlights the state’s immense biodiversity and centuries-old farming traditions.
Among the prominent varieties on display are the GI-tagged Kala Jeera rice from Koraput, Lilabati from Kendrapara, Black Jasmine from Bargarh, and Labanya Black Rice from Ganjam.
The initiative involves 85 Community-Based Organisations (CBOs) representing 3,695 members, reflecting the collective efforts of farmers and producer groups across the state.
Through participation in the global event, Odisha seeks to expand market access for its traditional rice products while preserving its unique agricultural legacy.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi emphasised that the conference provides an important platform to introduce Odisha’s distinctive rice varieties to a wider audience and promote the state’s agricultural strengths.
He noted that greater visibility can help enhance farmers’ incomes while safeguarding traditional crop varieties.
ORMAS is also facilitating interactions between farmers, producer groups, retailers, rice processors, exporters, institutional buyers, and hospitality sector stakeholders.
The focus is on improving packaging, branding, quality assurance, and supply chain development to strengthen the commercial viability of traditional rice products.
Rural Development Minister Rabi Narayan Naik said the initiative is aimed at creating stronger market linkages and ensuring better returns for farmers through improved product quality and enhanced market outreach.
The participation of Odisha at BIRC 2026 underscores the state’s commitment to promoting sustainable agriculture, preserving indigenous crop diversity, and connecting rural producers with emerging domestic and international markets.
