Odisha Heatwave Intensifies as Heat Index Soars Across State
Odisha is reeling under severe heatwave conditions as rising temperatures and humidity push the heat index to alarming levels across the state.
In western Odisha, Jharsuguda recorded the highest temperature, with dry continental winds keeping daytime heat extreme.
Meanwhile, coastal regions, including Bhubaneswar, are facing sticky, humid weather due to easterly winds from the Bay of Bengal, making conditions feel hotter than the actual readings.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that no immediate relief is expected, with heatwave conditions persisting in western districts and humid weather continuing along the coast.
A possible low‑pressure system may form over the Bay of Bengal later in May, but it is unlikely to bring quick respite.
Health experts have advised residents to avoid peak afternoon exposure, stay hydrated, wear light cotton clothing, and limit strenuous activity.
Vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly are at higher risk of heatstroke, dehydration, and fatigue.
The combination of dry hot winds, high daytime temperatures, moisture from Bay of Bengal winds, and reduced cloud cover is trapping heat and limiting natural cooling, making this one of the most challenging summers Odisha has faced in recent years.
