Odisha CM Pushes for UNESCO Tag on Puri Ratha Yatra

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has formally requested Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat’s support for nominating the Puri Ratha Yatra to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list.

In his letter, Majhi emphasised that the Ratha Yatra is more than a religious festival—it embodies India’s civilisational traditions, inclusivity, spirituality, craftsmanship, music, dance, and mass participation.

He noted that the festival has been celebrated for centuries, attracting millions of devotees and visitors worldwide.

The Shree Jagannatha Temple Administration (SJTA) has already submitted the required documentation to UNESCO.

Majhi urged the Centre to expedite the proposal, stressing that inscription would strengthen global recognition of India’s intangible cultural heritage.

The Chief Minister expressed gratitude for the Centre’s cooperation and highlighted that the recognition would enhance India’s cultural standing on the international stage.
