Odisha, Centre Join Hands to Accelerate 588-km National Waterway-5 Project
Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Government and the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways have intensified efforts to expedite the development of the 588-km-long National Waterway-5 (NW-5), a strategic inland water transport corridor expected to transform cargo movement across the state.
A high-level review meeting involving senior officials from both the Centre and the Odisha Government discussed various aspects of the project, including infrastructure development, navigational facilities, land acquisition, environmental clearances, and operational frameworks.
National Waterway-5 is envisioned as a key logistics corridor connecting Odisha’s mineral-rich and industrial regions with major ports such as Paradip and Dhamra.
The project is expected to enhance inland water transport, reduce dependence on road and rail freight, and lower logistics costs for industries.
Officials reviewed plans for terminal development, maintenance of navigable water depth, construction of navigation locks, and measures to ensure uninterrupted cargo movement.
Discussions also focused on improving last-mile connectivity and addressing statutory and environmental requirements to facilitate smooth implementation.
The Odisha Government reiterated its commitment to supporting the project and assured full cooperation in resolving land-related and administrative issues.
The initiative aligns with the broader objective of promoting sustainable and cost-effective transportation while strengthening Odisha’s position as a logistics and industrial hub.
Once operational, National Waterway-5 is expected to significantly boost cargo transportation, particularly for coal, minerals, steel, and other bulk commodities, while contributing to economic growth and regional connectivity.
