Odisha Proposes 290 New EV Charging Stations Under PM E-Drive Scheme

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Government has intensified efforts to strengthen electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure across the state, proposing the establishment of 290 new public EV charging stations under the Centre’s PM E-Drive Scheme.

The move is aimed at accelerating EV adoption and supporting sustainable transportation across urban centres and highways.

According to official information, the Central Government had earlier approved 170 EV charging stations in seven major cities of Odisha during the first phase of the scheme.

In the second phase, proposals have been submitted for setting up an additional 290 charging stations across 13 major cities, including Rourkela, Talcher, Sambalpur, Paradip, Badabil, Belpahad, Berhampur, Brajrajnagar, Chhatrapur, Jharsuguda, Joda, Keonjhar, and Rajgangpur, as well as along key national and state highways.

The proposed locations include 68 Wayside Amenity Centres managed by the Tourism Department and strategic highway corridors, including the economically significant Paradip-Badabil corridor.

To ensure effective implementation, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has been appointed as the project implementing agency.

An expert team led by General Manager J.K. Patnaik will conduct field surveys to assess the feasibility of the proposed sites before final approvals are granted.

Apart from the Centre-supported initiative, the Odisha Commerce and Transport Department is independently establishing more than 500 additional EV charging stations across the state.

Of these, 24 stations are already operational in Bhubaneswar.

Charging facilities are being developed at important public locations, including bus terminals and truck terminals, to enhance accessibility for EV users.

Officials believe the expanded charging network will help eliminate range anxiety among EV users, encourage greater adoption of electric vehicles, and contribute to Odisha’s transition toward a greener and more sustainable transport ecosystem.

The government is also providing consumer subsidies under the state’s Electric Vehicle Policy to promote EV purchases.
