Odisha Cabinet clears CGD policy to fast-track PNG, CNG expansion across state
Bhubaneswar, Apr 22 (UNI) The Odisha Cabinet on Wednesday approved the Odisha City Gas Distribution (CGD) Policy, aimed at accelerating the expansion of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) infrastructure across the state in line with the national push for clean and sustainable energy.
The new policy seeks to address key bottlenecks such as delays caused by multi-agency approvals and the absence of a unified regulatory framework. By streamlining procedures and simplifying clearances, it is expected to facilitate faster implementation of CGD projects.
Briefing mediapersons after the Cabinet meeting, Chief Secretary Anu Garg said the policy is designed to create a clear and efficient framework for the development of PNG and CNG infrastructure. It also aims to promote the rapid adoption of cleaner fuels while ensuring timely execution of projects.
She added that the policy will focus on maintaining a safe and reliable gas supply through robust asset management systems. It will also support coordination for the development of Compressed Biogas (CBG) plants under the Swachh Bharat Mission.
The Housing and Urban Development Department will serve as the nodal agency for implementation, supported by a State-level High-Powered Committee and district-level mechanisms to ensure effective coordination.
Highlighting the economic benefits, the Chief Secretary said the policy will not impose any financial burden on the state exchequer. Instead, it is expected to attract private investment, generate employment opportunities, and improve the ease of doing business in Odisha.
To further encourage participation, the government has proposed a one-time moratorium on approval fees until March 2027, the Chief Secretary stated.
