Odisha Heatwave Intensifies; IMD Issues Yellow Alert for 17 Districts

Odisha is reeling under a severe heatwave as temperatures soar across coastal and western regions.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for 17 districts, including Ganjam, Khordha, Cuttack, Puri, Balasore, and Sundargarh, warning of extreme heat and high humidity over the next five days.

Jharsuguda recorded 44.6°C, the highest temperature in India, while Dhenkanal followed at 43.2°C, highlighting the intensity of the heatwave. Residents are facing oppressive conditions both day and night, with warm nights adding to public discomfort.

Forecasts suggest the heatwave will persist, particularly in Kandhamal and Bolangir, where humid conditions are expected. However, southern districts such as Malkangiri and Koraput may experience light rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and winds of 30–40 km/h over the next two days, offering limited relief.
