Odisha Boosts Cyclone Safety with Six New Wind Speed Recorders

Bhubaneswar: In a significant step toward strengthening disaster preparedness, Odisha will install six new High Wind Speed Recorders (HWSRs) along its coastline.

These advanced devices will measure extreme wind speeds during cyclones, providing real‑time data to improve accuracy in tracking landfall intensity.

The new installations will be located in Ganjam, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, and Balasore, raising the state’s total number of HWSRs to twelve.

Odisha already operates 39 manned surface observatories, 29 automatic weather stations, 136 automated rain gauge stations, and four airport‑based weather systems.

Officials said the expansion will enhance forecasting precision and support disaster management teams in swift response during cyclonic events.

The initiative reflects Odisha’s proactive strategy to minimise risks and safeguard communities through advanced technology.
