Odisha Assembly Approves Major Salary Hike for MLAs and Ministers

The Odisha Legislative Assembly has unanimously passed a revised remuneration bill, granting substantial salary and allowance hikes for Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), Ministers, the Speaker, and pensions for former legislators.

Under the new provisions, salaries and pensions for both sitting and former MLAs have been raised to Rs 90,000. The Speaker’s monthly salary has nearly doubled to Rs 98,000, while allowances such as car, sumptuary, and accommodation have seen dramatic increases.

MLAs will now receive enhanced benefits, including a Rs 96,000 sumptuary allowance, Rs 75,000 constituency visit allowance, and Rs 50,000 monthly transport allowance.

Other reimbursements, such as medical treatment, electricity charges, and travel allowance,s have also been significantly upgraded.

The decision follows recommendations from an advisory committee led by MLA Bhaskar Madhei, formed by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.

Legislators across party lines supported the move, citing inflation and financial hardships faced by former representatives.

The unanimous approval reflects a rare moment of consensus in the Assembly, with lawmakers agreeing that outdated compensation structures no longer matched the rising cost of living.
