Odisha Accelerates PNG Expansion to Reduce LPG Dependence

The Odisha Housing & Urban Development Department has directed all district and urban local bodies to fast‑track the expansion of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) connections wherever City Gas Distribution (CGD) infrastructure is available.

The move follows a nationwide push by the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas to promote PNG as a cleaner, safer, and more cost‑effective alternative to LPG.

Officials have been instructed to encourage households already connected to PNG to surrender redundant LPG connections, while persuading eligible LPG consumers in PNG‑ready areas to migrate.

Awareness campaigns will highlight PNG’s safety, convenience, and environmental benefits.

Urban Local Bodies have also been asked to provide administrative support to CGD companies to ensure speedy rollout and resolve local hurdles.

This initiative is aligned with the Odisha City Gas Distribution Policy, 2026, notified in April.

The state aims to reduce subsidy burdens, curb diversion of subsidised LPG, and strengthen energy security.

With coordinated efforts between local bodies, Oil Marketing Companies, and CGD entities, Odisha is positioning itself as a leader in India’s clean cooking fuel transition.
