Nuapada Migrant Worker Dies Returning from Karnataka, Family Faces Crisis
Nuapada district has been shaken by the tragic death of Biswambar Majhi, a migrant worker from Biswanathpur village, who collapsed on a train while returning home from Karnataka.
Majhi had been working at a brick kiln for the past four months to support his family.
Doctors in Sitapur, Karnataka, conducted a post‑mortem before handing over the body to his relatives.
His remains were transported by ambulance, reaching his village after midnight.
The family bore Rs 20,000 of the transportation cost, while the kiln owner contributed Rs 30,000, bringing the total expense to Rs 50,000.
Majhi was the sole breadwinner, leaving behind his father, wife, and two children aged 14 and 11.
His sudden death has plunged the family into despair, highlighting the vulnerability of migrant workers who risk their lives for survival.
Nuapada Labour Officer Jasmin Sahu assured that the government will extend assistance to the bereaved family.
However, the incident underscores the persistence of “dadan” (distress migration) in Nuapada, despite official claims of a dadan‑free district.
Families continue to migrate under harsh conditions, facing exploitation and uncertainty.
