Naveen Patnaik: Odisha a Global Beacon in Disaster Management

Puri, Odisha – The coastal city of Puri has become the stage for the BRICS Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group Technical Meeting, marking the first time Odisha has hosted a BRICS‑level conference.

Former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik expressed pride in Odisha’s remarkable disaster management journey, recalling the devastation of the 1999 Super Cyclone and the transformation that followed.

He emphasised that the state’s guiding principle remains “every life is precious.”

Patnaik highlighted Odisha’s globally recognised zero‑casualty model, built on resilient infrastructure and strong community preparedness.

He noted that Odisha has emerged as a global beacon in disaster management, inspiring international recognition.

Welcoming BRICS delegates, Patnaik called for collective global efforts to strengthen resilience and ensure safer futures for communities worldwide.
