Human‑Elephant Conflict Deepens as Tusker Dies in Odisha
Kalahandi, Odisha: A tusker was found dead in Porangla forest near Komardha village under Narla range, suspected to have succumbed to injuries after a clash with another elephant.
Villagers reported hearing loud trumpeting and chaos among elephant herds before discovering the carcass, which had been decomposing for two days.
Forest officials, accompanied by a veterinary team, conducted a post‑mortem and buried the tusker.
Senior officers inspected the site but noted safety concerns as elephant herds remained nearby.
The region has witnessed frequent elephant movement, with five tuskers dying in clashes or accidents over the past decade.
Human‑elephant conflict has also claimed more than ten lives and destroyed thousands of acres of farmland.
Despite repeated interventions, the Forest Department continues to face challenges in balancing elephant conservation with safeguarding human lives and property.
