Utkal Diwas 2026: Odisha’s Journey of Pride and Progress

Bhubaneswar, April 1: Odisha today celebrates Utkal Diwas, marking the historic formation of the state on April 1, 1936.

The day commemorates the relentless struggle of leaders like Madhusudan Das, Gopabandhu Das, Fakir Mohan Senapati, and Nilakantha Das, who championed the cause of a separate province based on linguistic identity.

Initially comprising six districts—Cuttack, Puri, Balasore, Sambalpur, Koraput, and Ganjam—Odisha became the first Indian state formed on linguistic lines.

Cuttack served as the capital before Bhubaneswar emerged as the modern administrative hub.

The celebration is not just about history; it is a vibrant showcase of Odisha’s art, dance, music, and cuisine, reflecting the state’s rich cultural heritage.

The renaming from Orissa to Odisha in 2011 further reinforced its linguistic and cultural roots.

Utkal Diwas 2026 is a reminder of the state’s resilience, unity, and progress, inspiring citizens to honour their past while embracing a future of growth and pride.
