BMC Ultimatum: 4,600 Unauthorised Commercial Units in Bhubaneswar Must Submit Papers

Bhubaneswar: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a four‑week ultimatum to owners of unauthorised commercial establishments operating in residential areas, directing them to upload planning approvals and documents online between August 8 and 22.

The move follows a Supreme Court directive mandating strict enforcement against illegal commercial use of residential properties.

Notices have already been served to more than 4,600 establishments, including shops, hostels, hotels, clinics, and educational institutions.

Commissioner Chanchal Rana stressed that non‑compliance will invite sealing or demolition under the Odisha Development Authorities Act, 1982, and Planning Regulations.

Even legally operating units must update their records on the BMC portal (www.bmc.gov.in) for inspection.

Owners lacking approvals have been advised to apply for regularisation or fresh permission.

The BMC emphasised that residential zones are meant for living, not unregulated commerce, and urged public cooperation to ensure urban safety and planning discipline.
