Rare Scarlet Macaw Dies During Treatment at Nandankanan Zoo
Bhubaneswar: A rare Scarlet Macaw housed at the Nandankanan Zoological Park has died while undergoing treatment, officials said on Thursday.
The deceased bird was a male parrot belonging to the exotic Scarlet Macaw species.
According to sources, the bird had been showing signs of illness and was not consuming food.
Zoo authorities observed that the parrot was sitting isolated in a corner of its enclosure, prompting immediate veterinary attention.
It was subsequently shifted to the isolation ward of the veterinary care centre for treatment.
Despite medical intervention, the Scarlet Macaw succumbed during treatment, reducing the number of the species at the zoological park.
The development comes less than two months after Nandankanan received four Scarlet Macaws, comprising two males and two females, from the Radha Krishna Temple Elephant Welfare Trust (RKTEWT) in Jamnagar, Gujarat, a part of Anant Ambani-led Vantara, on September 12.
With the death of the male bird, only three Scarlet Macaws now remain at the zoo. Zoo authorities are expected to closely monitor the health of the remaining birds.
