Teen Student Gives Birth, School Head Suspended in Mayurbhanj Hostel Case
Baripada: The in-charge headmistress of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) at Government UPS Dhanpur in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district has been suspended following a controversial incident involving a Class X student who reportedly gave birth to a baby boy.
According to official reports, the student, who was allegedly around seven months pregnant, delivered the child at PRM Medical College and Hospital in Baripada.
The incident has triggered widespread concern over student safety, welfare, and supervision within residential educational institutions.
Following the development, the Betanati Block Education Officer suspended the school’s in-charge headmistress, Namita Majhi, citing prima facie negligence in the discharge of her official duties and failure to ensure the safety and security of girl students.
The suspension order was issued under Rule 12 of the Odisha Civil Services (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules, 1962, and has come into effect immediately pending further orders.
Authorities stated that accountability would be fixed after a detailed inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
As per the order, the suspended headmistress has been attached to another government school during the suspension period and will receive a subsistence allowance as per service rules.
To ensure uninterrupted functioning of the institution, district education authorities have assigned additional responsibilities to other officials for managing the school, hostel operations, and welfare activities of resident students.
The incident has reignited debates on safety monitoring, counselling mechanisms, and welfare oversight in residential schools for girls across the state.
