Dhanteras Beyond Gold: A Celebration of Wealth, Health and Togetherness

Bhubaneswar: As the festive season begins, Dhanteras continues to be celebrated across India as a symbol of prosperity, well-being and family unity.

While the festival is widely associated with purchasing gold, silver and household items, its significance extends far beyond material wealth.

Observed on the thirteenth lunar day of Krishna Paksha in the Hindu month of Ashvin, Dhanteras marks the beginning of the Diwali festivities.

The festival traces its roots to the ancient legend of Samudra Manthan, or the churning of the cosmic ocean.

According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth and prosperity, Lord Kuber, the god of riches, and Lord Dhanvantari, regarded as the divine physician and the father of Ayurveda, emerged during this celestial event.

Their appearance made the day an occasion dedicated to prosperity, health and spiritual well-being.

Traditionally, devotees perform Lakshmi Puja, light earthen lamps and offer prayers seeking prosperity and happiness for their families.

Many households also purchase new items on this day, believing that acquiring valuables and essential goods brings good fortune and abundance in the coming year.

Gold and silver jewellery, coins, brass utensils, silverware, separate idols of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi, and Kuber Yantras are among the items considered auspicious for purchase during Dhanteras.

The festival has witnessed growing popularity in Odisha over the years.

While Akshaya Tritiya was traditionally the preferred occasion for major purchases in the state, Dhanteras has increasingly emerged as a significant shopping and religious event.

At the same time, certain purchases are traditionally discouraged during Dhanteras.

Iron products, glass items, sharp objects, black-coloured goods, footwear and plastic items are often regarded as inauspicious according to popular beliefs associated with the festival.

Beyond buying precious metals and household items, Dhanteras serves as a reminder that true prosperity encompasses good health, harmonious relationships, spiritual fulfilment, and collective well-being.

The festival continues to inspire people to seek a balanced and meaningful life while ushering in the celebrations of Diwali.
