Odisha’s GARIMA Scheme: Dignity for Sanitation Workers
The Odisha government has reinforced its commitment to the welfare of sanitation workers through the GARIMA Scheme, a pioneering initiative aimed at ensuring dignity, safety, and social security.
The scheme focuses on eliminating hazardous manual sanitation practices by introducing mechanised cleaning systems and mandating the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Universal identification and registration of sanitation workers are being carried out to extend benefits to all engaged in urban sanitation.
Minister Dr Krushna Chandra Mahapatra highlighted that sanitation workers and their families will be provided with housing, healthcare, insurance, and welfare support.
The scheme also links workers to Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) for permanent housing, while offering financial inclusion, periodic health check‑ups, and insurance coverage.
A dedicated GARIMA Helpline (14420) has been launched to address grievances and provide information support.
By modernising sanitation practices and recognising workers as vital contributors to public health, Odisha sets a benchmark for inclusive urban governance.
