Odisha Records 28% Above Normal Monsoon Rainfall Till August 19

Odisha has witnessed a significantly stronger monsoon this year, recording 1006.5 mm of cumulative rainfall between June 1 and August 19, 2026.

This figure is 28% higher than the state’s normal average of 786.5 mm, placing Odisha in the “excess” rainfall category, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

District Trends

  • Excess Rainfall (20–59% above normal): 14 districts, including Khordha (912.9 mm), Kataka (1145.1 mm), Puri (945 mm), Mayurbhanj (1174.4 mm), Sambalpur (1325.6 mm).
  • Large Excess (≥60% above normal): 7 districts such as Bargarh (1438.7 mm, +72%), Sonepur (1495.1 mm, +80%), Boudh (1469.9 mm, +106%).
  • Normal Rainfall (±19%): 5 districts including Ganjam (513.3 mm), Koraput (753.3 mm), Rayagada (560.5 mm), Kandhamal (1020.3 mm).
  • Deficient Rainfall: 5 districts, including Kalahandi (772.9 mm), Malkangiri (707.2 mm), Nabarangpur (631.4 mm), Gajapati (413.2 mm).

Cause

The IMD attributes the surplus to active monsoon systems over the Bay of Bengal, which triggered widespread rainfall across Odisha.

Notably, no district has been categorised as “large deficient” this season.
