BJD Seeks 30‑Day Extension of Voter Roll Claims Amid Flood Crisis

The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has urged the State Chief Electoral Officer, RS Gopalan, to extend the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) claims and objections period by 30 days beyond August 19.

The party highlighted that severe floods and heavy rainfall across Odisha have disrupted road connectivity, displaced thousands, and shifted public focus to safety and relief.

Earlier, the Election Commission of India had extended the deadline once, from August 4 to August 19.

However, the BJD argued that electors, Booth Level Agents (BLAs), and officials are unable to complete notices, hearings, and verifications under current conditions.

The party warned that closing the process on August 19 risks depriving genuine electors of their right to inclusion, correction, or restoration in the electoral roll.

It also demanded special outreach and facilitation for flood‑affected voters, along with wide publicity of any extended deadline to ensure equitable participation.

The BJD emphasised that no eligible voter should lose their electoral rights due to natural calamities, urging the Election Commission to provide more time and support for flood‑hit communities.
