Floods Stall Odisha’s Electoral Roll Revision, BJD Seeks Extension

Bhubaneswar: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has urged the State Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) to extend the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) claims and objections period by 30 days, citing severe floods and continuous rainfall across Odisha.

In a memorandum submitted to CEO RS Gopalan, the party highlighted that widespread flooding, waterlogging, and disrupted communication have made it difficult for electors, Booth Level Agents (BLAs), and officials to complete verification and submissions before the current deadline of August 19.

The BJD acknowledged the Election Commission of India’s earlier extension from August 4 to August 19 but stressed that worsening conditions now demand further relief.

The party warned that closing the process on August 19 could deprive genuine electors of their right to inclusion, correction, or restoration in the electoral roll.

The memorandum emphasised the need for special outreach and facilitation measures in flood‑affected districts, along with wide publicity of any revised deadline.

The party urged the CEO to seek approval from the Election Commission to safeguard democratic participation during this crisis.
