Odisha Police Bust Major Cattle Smuggling Racket, Rescue 300+ Cattle, Arrest 11

In a sweeping crackdown across northern Odisha, police have dismantled a major cattle smuggling racket, rescuing more than 300 cattle and arresting 11 accused.

The operation, which began in Keonjhar district, extended to Bhadrak, Jajpur, and Mayurbhanj, following tip-offs from vigilant locals.

Authorities raided multiple locations, including the residence of alleged mastermind Surjit Mohanty, where ₹33 lakh in cash, gold, and silver ornaments were seized.

In Rairangpur’s Tentoposi, raids on seven houses led to the confiscation of four pickup trucks and nine motorcycles used in the illegal trade.

Police revealed that the accused posed as dealers in construction materials to mask their smuggling activities. Economic offence charges have been filed, with investigations underway into the sources of their income and assets.

Officials confirmed that more arrests are expected as the probe intensifies, highlighting concerns about cross-border trafficking routes into West Bengal.

This operation underscores the growing vigilance of Odisha Police and the crucial role of community participation in curbing organised smuggling networks.
