Odisha Launches Puri Coastal Marathon 2026, CM Majhi Highlights Vision for Sports and Tourism

The Odisha government has officially launched the Puri Coastal Marathon 2026, positioning it as a premier sporting event aimed at promoting fitness, tourism and Odisha’s unique coastal heritage.

The marathon is scheduled to be held in Puri on December 13, 2026 and will feature a total prize pool of ₹1 crore.

The vision for the marathon was unveiled by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida, who emphasised the state’s commitment to strengthening its reputation as a hub for both sports and tourism.

The event is being promoted as India’s only marathon that combines both sand and road running, offering participants a unique racing experience along Puri’s scenic coastline.

Officials said the marathon is expected to attract runners from across India and abroad while showcasing Odisha’s culture, spirituality and hospitality.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said the marathon reflects Odisha’s growing focus on sports development and healthy lifestyles.

He noted that the event aligns with the state’s broader vision of nurturing sporting talent and encouraging public participation in fitness activities.

Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida said the marathon would serve as a platform to integrate sports, tourism and Puri’s rich cultural identity, helping boost the city’s national and international profile.

Former Indian cricket captain Kapil Dev, who attended the event, praised Odisha’s growing sports ecosystem and expressed confidence that the state could emerge as a leading destination for both tourism and sporting events.

The launch ceremony also recognised the achievements of prominent athletes, including Baranica Elangovan, India’s first Asian Games pole vault medallist, and Animesh Kujur, the national record holder in the men’s 200-metre sprint.

Organisers unveiled promotional material for the marathon, including the official jersey and medal designs.

The initiative follows a statewide promotional run conducted on World Tourism Day, aimed at generating awareness and encouraging participation.

With a blend of athletics, tourism promotion and cultural celebration, the Puri Coastal Marathon 2026 is expected to become one of Odisha’s flagship annual sporting events.
