Odisha Remembers Maa Sarala Devi, Pioneer of Women’s Empowerment

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Legislative Assembly Speaker Surama Padhy paid floral tributes to renowned freedom fighter and social reformer Maa Sarala Devi on her death anniversary at a commemorative event held near the Odisha Assembly premises on Saturday.

Speaking on the occasion, Surama Padhy described Maa Sarala Devi as a symbol of women’s empowerment and a towering figure in Odisha’s socio-political history.

She highlighted Sarala Devi’s significant contribution to India’s freedom struggle and her lifelong dedication to social reform, women’s education, and public welfare.

The Speaker noted that Maa Sarala Devi holds a special place in Odisha’s history as the state’s first woman Member of the Legislative Assembly.

Her efforts in promoting female literacy, social awareness, and community development laid the foundation for greater participation of women in public life.

Emphasising the relevance of her ideals in contemporary society, Surama Padhy said that Sarala Devi’s selfless service and commitment to social upliftment continue to inspire generations of women and social leaders across the state.

The tribute ceremony witnessed the participation of several eminent personalities, including Babu Singh, MLA of Ekamra constituency, officials of the Department of Odia Language, Literature and Culture, intellectuals, and social workers.

The gathering paid homage to the legendary leader and reiterated the need to uphold her vision of an inclusive and empowered society.
