Odisha Launches Mission Shakti Self‑Defence Training for SHG Women
The Odisha government has rolled out a pioneering self‑defence training programme under Mission Shakti, targeting 5,000 women members of Self Help Groups (SHGs) across five districts — Khordha, Cuttack, Puri, Keonjhar, and Ganjam.
Deputy Chief Minister and Women & Child Development Minister Pravati Parida emphasised that financial independence must be complemented by safety and dignity.
She noted that the training will empower women to move fearlessly, enhancing their participation in economic activities.
The initiative is being implemented by the Department of Mission Shakti in collaboration with the National Commission for Women (NCW).
NCW Chairperson Vijaya Kishore Rahatkar praised the programme as a crucial step toward institutional support for women’s safety and self‑reliance.
Senior officials, including Shobhna Mohanty (Odisha State Commission for Women), Mansi Nimbhal (IAS), and Shailendra Kumar Jena, attended the launch event.
This pilot project aims to strengthen women‑led development in Odisha, ensuring SHG members gain both economic empowerment and personal security, thereby contributing to inclusive growth.
