Odisha Faces Six Days of Heatwave and Thunderstorm Alerts
Bhubaneswar, April 29: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued dual warnings for thunderstorms and heatwaves across Odisha, expected to persist for the next six days.
According to IMD, 22 districts are under thunderstorm alerts, while 16 districts face heatwave warnings.
Severe thunderstorms with wind speeds of 50–60 kmph have been forecast for Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, and Bhadrak, placed under orange warning.
Meanwhile, the state continues to reel under extreme heat, with Jharsuguda recording 45°C, the highest in Odisha. At least 11 towns crossed the 40°C mark, intensifying the heatwave conditions.
Afternoon Kalbaisakhi storms have brought temporary relief in some regions, accompanied by strong winds, heavy rain, and lightning.
However, IMD has cautioned residents to avoid exposure during peak heat and storm hours, urging preventive measures against heat‑related illnesses and storm hazards.
The combination of scorching daytime temperatures and violent evening storms is expected to challenge Odisha’s preparedness for nearly a week.
